Tanpopo Ramen and Sake Bar sits quietly on Broadway in Albany, offering an intimate dining experience focused on Japanese ramen and small plates with a nod to authentic flavors. The space itself is on the compact side, which creates a cozy atmosphere that’s perfect for a low-key evening out or a casual date night rather than larger groups or noisy gatherings.

The restaurant’s vibe leans into its old-school diner location with touches that evoke a unique cultural blend — subtle enough to make the setting feel distinct without being overwhelming. Expect a spot where locals linger over bowls of rich broth and thoughtfully prepared dishes, like the spicy tonkotsu ramen or the pork belly buns, which draw a lot of attention thanks to their rich flavor and satisfying texture.

On the menu, ramen is the main event, ranging from classic miso and tonkotsu broths to more adventurous options like curry ramen and seafood ramen with scallops and shrimp. The portions tend to be generous, making it a solid choice after a long day or even as a heartening stop on a weekend stroll in this part of Albany. For those who enjoy small bites alongside their noodles, items such as takoyaki, steamed dumplings, and crab rangoons add variety and balance to the meal.

The staff here add to the experience with warm, attentive service that helps reinforce the casual but thoughtful vibe of the place. It’s the sort of spot where you can feel taken care of without the fuss of formal dining. The interior, although modest in size, invites those interested in a quiet evening of well-executed, comforting Japanese cuisine.

For visitors and locals alike, Tanpopo works best on quieter evenings when you can settle in and appreciate the mix of familiar and less common dishes against a backdrop of subtle cultural cues. If you’re interested in exploring ramen beyond the standard fare, or if steamed pork belly buns sound like something new to try, this is a spot where flavors take center stage without pretense.

We were really in the mood for ramen to end our road trip and came by this really unique restaurant! The setup and vibes were immaculate, and it truly felt like stepping into a piece of history. That being said, it is a smaller establishment and might not be suitable for large groups. We ordered the pork belly buns, 2 of the teppanyaki chicken with rice, and 2 of the tonkotsu ramen. The food was delicious, and the cut of the pork in both the buns and the tonkotsu ramen were perfect! The only thing to note is that we did end up waiting 20+ minutes for our food. But all in all it was a great and delicious experience!

Tried the Curry Chicken Spicy Ramen here and it was fantastic. The broth was rich, flavorful, and had just the right amount of heat without being overwhelming. The shredded chicken was tender, the noodles were perfectly cooked, and the half-boiled egg added a nice creamy balance to the spice. The portion size is generous, and it’s definitely a hearty, comforting meal. If you enjoy bold flavors and a good kick of spice, this one’s worth ordering.

This was my first time having real ramen, which is a lot like pho, and I really liked it. The crab rangoons crush the kind you get at a typical Chinese restaurant. The pork belly buns are unique and super tasty. The place is located in an old school diner, which is cool. I will say that the bathroom unintentionally mimics something you’d find in one of those tiny Japanese apartments, which I guess adds to the experience.

The place had such a cool & authentic/unique atmosphere, I liked looking at all the 1$ money . The waitresses (Alex and Gianna) were so nice and kind to us, and to the other customers we observed! They food was also SOOOOOOOOO good!!! The steamed pork belly buns were the best I have ever had so far in my life! (Even though they were the first steamed pork buns I have ever had in my life), The ramen was so big that the three of us split it three ways and it did NOT disappoint. It was so flavorful and the mung bean sprouts added just the right amount of crunch. And the broth was TO DIE FOR, I've had multiple ramen for like DOUBLE the price of this with HALF the flavor, but this had ALL the flavor AND SOME EXTRA!!! Alex was also so nice for giving us a bag of ice so we didn't have to buy some ourselfs :) 10000000% recommend!

What the heck this place is such a gem. Perfect ramen and tucked into a little vintage diner with booths and everything. 10/10. Want to come back and try every single ramen on the menu.
